We are an intentional communityliving in the heart of counterculture San Francisco. We have been building life together for over 12 years.

Our mission has been to build a commons and to explore what commoning can become. Our main goals are to ensure that whatever happens in the current unfolding geopolitical crises, that someone has both done all the dishes and replaces the toilet roll. It's a process, but we believe we are up to this challenge.

The house

As we explore ways of sharing space and time, we have a mix of shared and private rooms to meet different needs. Despite living in density, many of us are introverts :)

How we hold it

01

Comped & subsidised stays

We want to offer free or reduced-cost stays to people who would benefit from being here but cannot afford market rates.

02

A well-maintained building

A 120-year-old Victorian needs ongoing love. Financial health means we can care for the physical space that takes care of us.

03

Permanent community ownership

So it can never be lost to the market. To transition the building out of private ownership into a community land trust through District Commons.

04

Low margin by design

We run at low margin by design. We publish our model because transparency is foundational to intentional community, and we hope this is useful for others.

Gathering

Gatherings here are occasional and specific: a dinner, a salon, a work party, a party that spills onto the street. They come together when someone in the house wants to make one, and they are usually shared through the people already connected to the household rather than announced publicly.
